The City of New Haven is undertaking a rezoning of major commercial corridors in New Haven, including Grand Avenue, Whalley Avenue, and Dixwell Avenue.

The City Plan Department, working with the community and other City Departments, aims to:

  1. Revise and update the zoning ordinance to make these vital corridors more vibrant and livable;
  2. Improve and realize the benefits of proximity and walkable connections to downtown; and
  3. Guide a transition between lower density residential and higher density business zones.

The Commercial Corridor Study will be an iterative process with multiple opportunities for the community to collaborate with the City and shape the outcomes of the study. There will be a listening meeting at the beginning of the process for each of the corridors, as well as a second community meeting later on so that residents can give feedback on the proposed zoning changes. Before changes can be implemented, they will need to referred to the City Plan Commission for a public hearing, and then go before the Board of Alders for final approval.

To learn more about these efforts, head to the New Haven Commercial Corridors website. The website will be updated regularly with upcoming meetings, opportunities to provide feedback, data gathered, and proposed changes.
