Overview
Members are appointed by the Mayor with approval of the New Haven Board of Alders per Section 177, Art. XXXI of the City Charter Revised 11/2013, Section 8-5 of the CT General Statutes for a five-year term.

The Board of Zoning Appeals is comprised of five members; three appointed by the Mayor and two appointed by the Board of Alders. Members appointed by the Mayor must be approved by the Board of Alders. Term of board membership is five years.

The board hears and decides cases in which it is claimed either that some ruling of the City’s Zoning Enforcement Officer was in error, or that special circumstances require a variance from the strict terms of the zoning ordinance, or that certain privileges are justified as special exceptions.

General duties of the BZA include:

  • Review of applications and appeals for Variances
  • Special Exceptions
  • Reviews of Administrative Order
