The 2020 U.S. Census is an extremely important national endeavor despite the unexpected challenge of the COVID-19 epidemic. It is the only way to ensure that our state and its cities receive their fair share of federal health care resources for the next ten years.

Census data also determine legislative representation and guide the distribution of over $675 billion of federal funding. The state of Connecticut receives about $2,900 of federal funding every year for every person counted in the census. Programs funded based on census data include Medicaid, Head Start, Pell Grants, school lunches, adult education, Section 8 housing, and many more.

As a local partner of the U.S. Census Bureau, the City Plan Department is guiding coordination of local census outreach efforts, particularly to New Haven’s hard-to-count census tracts and demographic groups. City Plan staff have been convening a Complete Count Committee (CCC) of local agencies, organizations, and leaders since summer 2019 to increase awareness and motivate residents across our region to respond to the 2020 Census.
