About Snow Removal Operations in New Haven

The Department of Public Works is responsible for ensuring that the City’s 234 miles of roadway surfaces are safe and passable.

  • Streets that have one travel lane accessible for a front-wheel-drive car are defined as “passable” even if the street is snow-packed.
  • Streets are defined as “clear” when the pavement is bare, or all travel lanes are open and clear. In order to get roads open as quickly as possible, DPPW operates plowing and snow removal efforts on a 24-hour schedule.

During snow emergencies, the Emergency Operations Center will be opened for storm coordination and communications with a 6”+ snow forecast, and in cases of a lower snow total with other factors such as extreme cold for extended periods, dangerous wind or driving conditions, or other public safety factors.

A parking ban may be declared in the downtown area (Zone A), on all posted snow emergency routes (Zone B), and in residential areas, to assist with snow removal operations. Once declared, a parking ban prohibits parking on both sides of the street in the downtown area, as well as on posted snow emergency routes. During a declared parking ban in residential areas (Zone C), parking is only allowed on the even side of the street. Parking bans also require that no parking is allowed within 25 feet of any intersection, fire hydrant or bus stop.

Violations during declared parking bans may result in ticketing and/or towing. Following these rules during parking bans will greatly assist and maximize DPPW’s snow removal efforts:
  • Using off-street parking when possible. If not possible, park all vehicles the even side of the street.
  • Removing snow and ice from sidewalks within 24 hours of the storm’s conclusion. This will also save residents from receiving a violation (Please see our Snow and Ice removal guidelines)
  • DO NOT shovel/blow snow from your sidewalks and/or parking spaces into the street 
  • Stay off the roads while plowing is on-going
  • Making sure your snow contractor does not obstruct DPPW’s snow removal efforts
