The Permit & License Center was founded under the Chief Administrators Office in 2001 and was housed within the Building Department.

Upon it’s creation the Permit and License Center is comprised of the two following sub-divisions:

Vendor Division

The Vendor Division of the Permit & License Center handles the sale of items/food in the public right of way. (Such as: food truck/carts, peddlers, tag sales, door to door sales, etc.)

Although the Mobile Vending program is the largest portion of the center; it also handles the licensure of brokerage facilities, amusement facilities, and Rooming Houses.

Contractor Division

The Contractor Division of the Permit & License Center is a extension of the Public Works license/permit program. This division processes the local Excavation and Sidewalk licensure for contractors to conduct street work in New Haven. As well as process Obstruction Permits for dumpsters/pods, manhole access, scissor lift, boom lift, scaffolding and more…

Other than its work with contractors the Contractor Division also works with Business owners who would like to obtain Outdoor Seating over the city sidewalk or place sandwich board signs in the public right-of-way. As well as working with the public and event organizers for Special Events.
