The Office of Violence Prevention (OVP) is a newly established office under the New Haven Department of Community Resilience. The Office’s mission is to decrease firearm-related injury and mortality. Through proactive collaboration with law enforcement, community-based social service agencies, and residents, we prioritize community engagement and employ transparent, data-driven strategies. Our mission is to create safer and healthier communities through multifaceted programs, policies, and partnerships.

The Office of Violence Prevention is committed to significantly reducing firearm-related injury and death in our community. We achieve this by functioning as a central hub, fostering strategic alliances among law enforcement, community-based social service agencies, and residents. Recognizing the paramount importance of primary prevention, we actively partner with community-based organizations and units of government to change cultural norms and promote healthy development within the general population.

Central to our approach is community engagement, as we believe that collaboration is vital for lasting change. Utilizing a transparent data-driven methodology, we guide the formulation and execution of impactful programs. By continuously analyzing relevant statistics, such as rates of homicide, number of shootings, and the networks of high-risk individuals, we ensure that our strategies remain effective and adaptive.

Beyond program development and implementation, the OVP is dedicated to advocating for policies that foster a holistic and multi-pronged approach to community safety. By working in tandem with our partners, we strive to create an environment where violence becomes increasingly rare, and the health and well-being of our residents are prioritized.
