NEW HAVEN, CT -- This evening the New Haven Board of Alders passed an amended version of Mayor Justin Elicker's proposed $680.4 million budget for the City of New Haven for Fiscal Year 2024-2025. Mayor Elicker released the following statement after the vote:
"This budget is both a responsible budget and a responsive budget that will help support and sustain New Haven’s continued growth and vibrancy as a city.
It’s a responsible budget that maintains essential services, ensures we meet our financial obligations, and keeps new spending below the rate of inflation.
It’s also a responsive budget that meets the demands of our growing city with new strategic investments in affordable housing, education, parks, transportation, and public safety that will enhance the well-being and quality of life of our residents.
As we grow, we must grow inclusively, equitably, and sustainably. I believe this budget will help us accomplish that and I look forward to signing it into law.
New housing inspectors and staff will help ensure our residents’ homes are safe and well-maintained. New parks staff will help ensure our parks and athletic fields are better maintained for families to enjoy. An additional five million dollars dedicated to our schools will help ensure our children and educators are provided with more resources that they need in the classroom – and an additional two million dollars for our Youth@Work program will ensure that every young person who wants an afterschool or summer job can have one. New transportation staffers and our red light and speed safety camera program will help ensure pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists will be able to commute around the city more safely. Additional public safety personnel will help ensure the ranks of our first responders have appropriate leadership and that our residents and communities are safer.
A budget is always a balancing act between the need and demand for services and the ability to pay for them, and I believe this budget strikes the right balance.
I want to thank every New Haven resident who participated in the budget process and the Board of Alders for their continued partnership in passing a budget that reflects our values, supports our growth, uplifts our residents, and strengthens our communities so more New Haveners can thrive.”
