NEW HAVEN, CT – Last night, the Connecticut State Senate passed House Bill 5917, An Act Implementing the Recommendations of the Vision Zero Council, which was previously passed by the Connecticut House of Representatives. The legislation includes a provision that enables municipalities to install red light cameras, which Mayor Elicker, New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson, and News Haven Transportation Director Sandeep Aysola testified in support of earlier this year (see links). Following the bill’s passage by Connecticut General Assembly, Mayor Elicker released the following statement:

“We applaud the State Legislature for approving enabling legislation allowing municipalities to install red light cameras.

After many years of advocacy, it is heartening to see the work of so many safe streets advocates finally get across the finish line. The state’s support for the Vision Zero bill and red light cameras will save lives and allow our residents to live in safer communities.

The City of New Haven will now turn our attention toward working with our Board of Alders to craft a plan locally for implementation.”
