STATEMENT BY MAYOR JUSTIN ELICKER ON THE CONNECTICUT GENERAL ASSEMBLY’S PASSAGE OF THE BIENNIAL STATE BUDGET FOR FISCAL YEARS 2024-2025 AND THE INCREASE IN EDUCATION FUNDING FOR MUNCIPALITIES

Post Date:06/06/2023 9:00 AM

NEW HAVEN, CT – Today, the Connecticut General Assembly passed the biennial state budget for fiscal years 2024 and 2025 that includes new education funding and accelerates the phase-in of the Education Cost Sharing (ECS) grants, which Mayor Elicker testified in support of earlier this year. Following the vote, Mayor Elicker released the following statement:

“There is no better investment we can make than in our children’s education, and this year’s state budget provides an increase in education funding for New Haven public school students and other high-needs students and school districts across the state.

When compared to their more affluent peers, New Haven students and schools have been underinvested in for decades. Accelerating the phase-in of the ECS grant and the other education investments made in this year’s state budget are meaningful steps forward towards righting this historic wrong and providing more equitably funding for our children.

To be clear, we still have a long way to go, but thanks to Governor Lamont, our State Delegation, and the advocacy of parents, families and so many others, this year we moved further in the right direction.”
