Michael B. Smart

Michael B. Smart (City Clerk)Michael is a long-life resident of New Haven as well as a homeowner, attended Harry A. Conte School and Wilbur Cross High School, his career focus has been in retail, business management and proprietorship, real estate and public service.

While focusing on family and real estate and business ventures he decided to get involved in community efforts. He was instrumental in the revitalization of his neighborhood, working on Green Space Projects, Community Clean Ups as well as advocating for a "Sound Barrier" for the residents in his neighborhoods. This taught Michael about the way the state and local government really work; and also gave him the opportunity to meet individuals from all walks of life. This also led to Michael getting more involved, and eventually deciding to run for Alderman of the 8th Ward-Wooster Square, the most diverse Ward in the City which he represented for five terms.

In his capacity, Michael has represented and fought and worked for the residents of the 8th Ward, as well as residents from all over the City. He also served on several boards and commissions and has been actively involved in community organizations, as well as local societies. Michael chaired the Tax Abatement Committee and the Low Income Affordable Housing Committee (LISHTA), and was also a member of the Aldermanic Affairs Committee. In addition, he chaired and led a successful campaign for Charter Revision, which was overwhelming approved by city residents in November 2013.

Michael has been involved and has worked with the following community organizations:

  • The Wooster Square Block Watch
  • The Downtown Wooster Square Management Team
  • Historic Wooster Square Association
  • Friends Of Lenzi Park
  • The St. Andrew's Society
  • St. Mary Magdalen Society
  • The 8th Ward Democratic Committee

While Working with these organization, Michael has gained a great wealth of experience and knowledge and has also taught him how to working effectively with state and local officials, as well as with business and community leaders to build conscience for the residents citywide. Michael is committed to ensuring residents of this great city receive the effective representation and bringing people together to improve the quality of life for all of the residents of this great City and receive the highest quality customer service they deserve.
