The Peace Commission is comprised of seventeen members: Fifteen mayoral appointees and two Board of Alder appointees.

Members appointed by the mayor must be approved by the Board of Alders.

The function of the commission is to support the actions taken by the Board of Aldermen and the Mayor to protect the citizens of New Haven and lessen the danger of nuclear destruction to the City. This this end, the commission is responsible for the design and dissemination of material; establishing a resource library for peace education, including a speaker's bureau, and to assist citizens in the use of this material.

Members also work in conjunction with the New Haven Board of Education and other educational institutions in City to develop peace curricula on the causes of war, technology of the nuclear armaments, the history of disarmament and conflict resolution.
