STATEMENT BY MAYOR JUSTIN ELICKER ON YALE PRESIDENT PETER SALOVEY ANNOUNCING HE IS STEPPING DOWN AS YALE’S PRESIDENT AT THE END OF THE 2023-24 ACADEMIC YEAR

Post Date:08/31/2023 11:00 AM

NEW HAVEN, CT – Today, Yale President Peter Salovey announced he would be stepping down as Yale’s president and returning to serve as full-time faculty at the end of the 2023-24 academic year. Following Salovey’s announcement, Mayor Justin Elicker released the following statement:

“President Salovey has been a strong and committed partner to the City of New Haven, and it’s been a pleasure working with him on important and innovative initiatives that lift up the entire New Haven community through inclusive growth and opportunity.

Under President Salovey’s leadership, Yale has increased its commitment to and investments in the Elm City — with the university nearly doubling its annual voluntary contribution to the city in 2021 and working to co-create the Center for Inclusive Growth that will help create jobs and drive economic growth in ways that benefit all New Haven residents, among other initiatives.

The history and future of New Haven and Yale University are inextricably linked, and it is a link that has been strengthened and a future that is brighter thanks to President Salovey’s partnership and leadership.

I look forward to continuing to work together as he concludes his tenure as Yale’s president this year and as he continues to be a proud New Haven resident for years to come.”
