Street Sweeping 2024

The Department of Parks & Public Works annual street sweeping program will begin April 1st and run through October. In an effort to keep New Haven's 234 miles of streets clean we ask that residents do not blow leaves into the road. Our equipment is unable to pick up large piles of leaves, sand, or litter. You can view what route you are in here.

Yard Waste

Yard Waste pickup has resumed. As a reminder, leaf bags must be paper, composable, contain no branches, dirt, or rocks, and placed out at the curb on your refuse collection day (DO NOT USE PLASTIC CONTAINERS OR PLASTIC BAGS). Yard waste will only be picked up at the curb IF branches are 4 feet in length and tied in bundles not exceeding 1 foot in diameter. Residents also have the option of delivering yard waste to the Residential Waste Center at 260 Middletown Ave. (You will need coupons to dispose of yard waste at the Transfer Station.)

*Grass clippings should not be included in the leaf bags. Grass clipping makes great mulch. Spread clippings thinly and allow them to completely dry and turn brown. This process takes a week or two. It is generally safe and beneficial to use grass clippings as mulch for garden beds if the grass has been dried out and the lawn has not been treated with chemicals or contain any weed seeds. Grass clippings can enhance the soil quality and preserve moisture. Once they decompose, they become excellent plant food your plants need to thrive.*

Trash & Recycling Toters

Please remember to move Trash and Recycling toters to a secure location alongside or behind your residence after pick up.

If you need to report a missing toter please call Resident Services at 203-946-7700. We do maintain a waitlist. While you are waiting for trash toters to be replaced, you can use trash bags and, if necessary, put a smelly substance in the inside of the bag to save animals from tearing at it. If you are missing a Recycling toter, you can use a cardboard box to hold the recyclables between collections. Crews will empty both on your regularly scheduled refuse day if they are left out at the curb for pick-up.

We do not collect heavy trash or construction materials. Likewise, only recyclable items will be emptied. To see what is and isn’t recyclable please visit our Recycling page.
