Reduce Lead Hazards in Your Home

Lead is a poisonous substance found in most homes in New Haven built before 1978. When exposed to lead, children or adults can have permanent and severe health problems. But lead poisoning is 100% preventable.

Here are a few steps to keep you and your family safe:

Use furniture to block your child from paint that is chipping and/or peeling, especially on windowsills where your child may bite, chew or suck.
Keep windows closed that have peeling paint to prevent lead paint dust from moving throughout the home.
Wash and dry your child’s hands and toys often, especially before meals. Lead paint dust can be found on many surfaces including windowsills, floors and even toys.
Use “wet cleaning” to remove lead paint dust on wood floors, windowsills and counters.

Homeowners & Landlords

The New Haven Health Department can help make your home lead safe. The Department is offering funding assistance to abate lead based paint hazards and other hazardous conditions in the home.

Priority goes to New Haven homes built before 1978 in which children up to the age of 6 and/or pregnant women reside or visit often.

Parents & Caregivers

Lead poisoning cannot be undone. The most vulnerable households include:

Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant
Families with small children ages 0-6
Caregivers for small children ages 0-6

The good news is that poisoning from lead is 100% preventable!

Every child is required to have two blood tests for lead before their 3rd birthday.

Test results provide important information on your child’s health and growth and may help avoid long-term effects.

Contractors

Due to New Haven’s aging housing, 85% of New Haven homes are estimated to contain lead. To make homes lead-safe for children and families, we need more contractors to complete lead abatement projects. The City of New Haven Health Department is offering classes for contractors to become lead certified. Lead certified contractors can bid on lead abatement projects.
