NEW HAVEN FIRE DEPARTMENT ANNOUNCES THE PASSING OF FIRE FIGHTER THOMAS MIELES

NEW HAVEN, CT – It is with great sadness that the City of New Haven and the New Haven Fire Department announces the passing of Fire Fighter Thomas Mieles.

“It is with great sadness of heart that the New Haven Fire Department announces the passing of Fire Fighter Thomas Mieles. Fire Fighter Mieles, a New Haven resident, fulfilled his dream of becoming a New Haven fire fighter this year by joining the department on January 12, 2022,” said New Haven Fire Chief John Alston, Jr. in a departmental statement. “Fire Fighter Mieles was struck down in a multivehicle accident on U.S. Highway 91 North on Wednesday night, November 2, 2022, while off-duty. He was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Fire Fighter Mieles’ current assignment was protecting the neighborhood he lived in, at Engine 10, the Lombard Fire Station. We ask your kind thoughts and prayers during this time of bereavement for his family, friends, and department members, as they grieve this tragic loss.”

The passing of Fire Fighter Mieles is a tragic and devastating loss for the City of New Haven. He was a New Haven kid, went to Wilbur Cross High School, lived right nearby the firehouse in which he served, and was a longtime member of our community,” said Mayor Justin Elicker. “At 27 years old, we lost Fire Fighter Mieles while he far too young and our hearts break for his family, his fiancé, and his brothers and sisters at the New Haven Fire Department. The City of New Haven is committed to doing everything we can to support the Mieles family and to ensuring that the New Haven Fire Department has every resource it needs to get through this difficult time.”

“It’s an awful day for New Haven fire fighters. Our hearts are full of sorrow. We lost another brother – a young, energetic, full-of-life fight fighter who was happy to be here, happy to do the job, and happy to be a part of the New Haven fire fighter family,” said New Haven Fire Fighters Union President Patrick Cannon (Local 825). “To his immediate family and his fiancé, our hearts are with you. To all the members of the New Haven Fire Department, we are family that will pull together and support each other through this terrible loss.”

New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker, New Haven Fire Chief John Alston, Jr., New Haven Fire Fighters Union President Patrick Cannon, and other members of the New Haven Fire Department held a media availability earlier this morning, which can be viewed in full here. A photo of Fire Fighter Mieles can be found here.

All city and department flags will be lowered to half-mast in honor of Fire Fighter Mieles service to the City of New Haven.
