Post Date:07/20/2022 4:39 PM

NEW HAVEN, CT Mayor Justin Elicker released the following statement upon First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and U.S Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona’s visit to the Horizons summer learning program at Albertus Magnus College, which serves elementary students from local New Haven Public Schools.

"It was an honor to have First Lady Dr. Jill Biden and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona visit New Haven as part of their national Summer Learning Tour and for them to see first-hand the incredible summer learning and enrichment programs happening with our students and teachers.

New Haven is offering dozens of summer learning and enrichment programs that are serving over 4,000 students of all ages at our schools, parks, libraries, and other sites in every neighborhood across the City. These programs are fun for students and, importantly, help extend learning into the summer, prevent the summer slide, and provide opportunity and access to our students that otherwise might not be afforded to them.

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan funding, we’ve been able to invest an additional $3,500,000 in our summer camps, youth employment, and other learning and enrichment programs that are having both an immediate and lasting impact on our students’ growth and learning.”

Through New Haven Public Schools “Summer of Fun” initiative, summer camps and programs are being offered at over 20 schools, which are designed to provide enriching experiences and help accelerate learning. These activities include: K – 7 Literacy and Math Camps, Outdoor Adventure and Nature Camps, Multi-Lingual Learners Camps, Ninth-Grade Bridge Programs, Theatre Program, Social Justice Camps, High School Arts Camps, Culinary Program, Athletic Programs & Fitness Walks, Family Weekends in the Parks and Aquaculture Program .

The New Haven Youth and Recreation Department is using American Rescue Plan funding to help support extended summer camp services, the Youth@Work program, Family Fun Days, and its Summer Concert Series, among other programs.
